a
this is a big holiday weekend without in passover scouting on friday night in today's easter sunday
so millions of people all over the world are celebrating in it
these very important holidays of the year

and so we joined with and with with everyone in celebrating in our own way by coming out to being gulch for a sunday morning talk
in that chant that we just chanted you which is the verse for opening opening a sutra or opening a beginning a steady beginning and lecture ah is helpful to clear your mind make it ready for listening
to whatever the words are going to be and it says at the end i vow to taste the truth of the to target as words
and the target to that's a sanskrit word which means
the thus come one it's a it's a name given to the buddha
or it also means such this to target top
so i vow to taste the truth of the to target as words now shakyamuni buddha
before he
spoke
anything always had three considerations before he spoke even before he spoke one word and those three considerations for one whether what he had to sail as true
and the second was whether it was a benefit
and then after considering whether it was true or whether it was a benefit
the third consideration was the timing whether this was the time
say it
and
so with that in mind i offer this lecture

we recently finished a month-long a practice event called the tokyo bet susa sheen a special session
our special intensive training time that was held at green gulch and many people were here from all over the world a europe and all over the united states and lots of people from japan
and it was a
we learned a lot from each other i think we shared
back and forth
the people from japan
tata's many ceremonies and rituals and mark they marked the month long counter with various ceremonies that came at each
certain days of the month that they do regularly that we don't do
and
we also they also learn from us
lot of things that we do our very different for example having families and children live at the temple was very unusual for them are having women who are very involved in practice also be mothers and take care of children that was very it was amazing
the to them
that model is not ah operative in japan natal that they would bring some of these things back
and last week we had our annual buddha's birthday ceremony many of you i think came to that and that's that's our kind of annual rite of spring that we have a green gulch
and they watched that and
two pictures of the big masks and all these people who are out here at balloons and i think that was a current unusual event for them
so we share back and forth and there are many wonderful teachers who spoke here
one person in particular name nara zach hiroshi who is in his seventies as a key seventy five and he's about for ten in height and about
very powerful personal very condensed
and i enjoyed his lectures quite a bit

so the importance of having these
rates of rate is comes from the world the word re to which means order or
and it's associate with ordain and ritual these rights are what mark the difference between one day and another or one hour of the day and another certain rights certain ceremonies know some people are more inclined to mark
these kinds of changes in the year and other people forget their birthday forget anniversaries it's all the same you have to kind of say today is halloween you know let's do something for other people comes naturally they want to mark the seasons and marked the days
so the rites of spring
our birthday pet put his birthday pageant is now we do it the same way pretty much every year and people count on it this is something there's something settled and wonderful about being the same every year that so
this kind of order brings a kind of order
into our lives
recently at a resident speeding out of green gulch we were talking about ah wanting to buy organic
more organic foods and to eat in season because when a
when springtime comes around you know there's
we've lost the sense of what it's like to see in many cases we've lost what it's like to see those first green things come up out of the ground that get gathered to make this a wonderful rest before spring tonic soup
spring vegetables and you make one and how that must have tasted
two people who'd been eating dried fruits and root vegetables all winter and and then the first green comes up and you make it into delicious soup like medicine and tonic spring tonic soup
but we're so used to go into a mercator supermarket and seeing everything in
ah everything on the shelves pretty much or
you can get strawberries any time of the year you can get a piece any time of year so when springtime comes around
it may not be you mean i receive that thrill of the first green things so i'm talking about this
to try and eat ah
in season and go without the rest of the year you don't have peaches and nectarines even if they're coming from some warm country to actually live simply enough so that ah
so that you eat in season and then when that season comes around when the apples come in
it's a wonderful it's a thrill
and we've lost this it's a kind of aliveness that you have when you're living simply like that but with in many cases last this
and you know people don't want to eat rutabagas all winter they want to have a variety so we're used to this and it's it's hard to simplify our lives
so this ability to have almost whatever we want
that we haven't in our country for many people i'm not saying for everyone but for many of us to be able to go to a supermarket and choose whatever you want whenever he wanted
things from all over this is a kind of
ah britain
the skin kind of dead in our sensibilities of of what it's like to go without what it's like to have a real appetite for rhubarb something
you haven't had a whole year and it all as a short season and you make it into pie or something
this brings a a kind of vibrancy to her life that gets didn't by having whatever we want around us whenever we want it
and
this realm
you might call it a deva realm now in buddhism you know there's zone a mythological or psychological way of talking about different states of mind mind and body these different realms the six realms and they include the heavenly realms are the deva realms
but ah
realm of aggressive kind of beings assure realm of the genres then there's the hungry ghosts which are kind of greedy wanting never satisfied kind of state animal realm which is characterized by fear hell realms which characterized by lots of pain and
anguish and then the human realm which is characterized by suffering but imbalance it's not so terrible that you can't do anything and it's but you're not so
comfortable that you don't have a sense of other people on
other beings so the the danger of the deva realm or the heavenly realm of having lots of things anything you want whenever you wanted this is a kind of hindrance because what happens is
one loses touch with other people you actually
because you're not suffering yourself because you're not
in a difficult situation or feeling your own suffering it's hard to have compassion or suffering with other beings and and
you might it's like their problem or or you you just you don't have a sense of
the suffering of of beings i wanted to help other beings i have an example of this
person came to talk with me i'm kind of a middle aged man who had
embezzled from his employer when he was a younger man and he was describing to me what it was like
ah he was getting away with this activity and he felt kind of untouchable like he wasn't going to get caught he was really doing it in a smart way and yet all this power he had power over our
his employer and the other workers who weren't figuring it out and he didn't even consider it as being stealing necessarily it it wasn't stealing it was more
power and are being untouchable and nobody can stop me kind of feeling
almost
almost trance-like state of believing that he was untouchable
until the day when he was caught and then he plunged from this kenneth davao realm this heavenly realm of nothing can touch me immediately down into the hell realms of terrible anguish and suffering
due to
societies what society will do when when this kind of activity is uncovered but even while he was doing it he he had one kind of twinge that g this probably isn't so helpful for my employer g because he liked his employer
but that many kind of push that aside and went back to this activity
but from this heavenly realm when plunges into the hell realm that's on the wheel of life where these are depicted iconic graphically you go from the heavenly realm downright into hell realms
so
we often are
yearn for being in these heavenly realms wanting you know perfect beauty and wealth and intelligence go to be the smartest thing going you know
and these these are actually in buddhism thought of as hindrances great beauty great wealth great intelligence are seen as difficulties in practicing the way because of these very
this tendency to be separated from other beings and not feel the same things other people feel not understand the struggles someone has in trying to understand
the teaching or if you have great intelligence you know you kind of get the nuances and what someone's drive again and it's all very easy
so
and great beauty you are often set aside and treated differently and catered to and
not take him seriously in many cases
given preferential treatment way before and praise and so forth way before its time
and great wealth to never it's similar to this dave a room to not feel what it's like to have to have to work you know i know people who don't have to work in their biggest problem is what to do with their time what are they going to do all day there's nothing they have to
do so these are seen as hindrances
rather than something one would strive after
and this goes against kind of the usual way that society puts forth what it is that's ah
ha
what we should seek after what is the best things to seek after a great well but is that you know bumper sticker you can ever be too retro too thin you know
so this is kind of the
our culture's tendency to point to those things as what to go after

so in buddhism or not necessarily buddhism but in life true beauty true beauty is from the inside and you know you've been told this rate for a long time but
i came across a quote from abraham lincoln abraham like supposedly abraham lincoln said after forty after age forty we're all responsible for our own looks
now how i took that was so you know we're born into this world and we have certain parents and
yeah we're dressed a certain way and seventy combs her hair and we look a certain way is that doesn't have so much to do with us you know but through our own actions and our own
thinking and our own heart over the years we begin to
the fruits of our own actions begin to show up so who we are is totally revealed it's not a hidden think it all that if you think about that that are face and bodies show exactly to the world who we are after for he takes a while
it's embarrassing you know it's kind of
frightening frightening and embarrassing to think that or that revealed you know
so after forty we have we it's our own responsibility how we look and i think you probably know people who over the years you know they may be very bitter people and their face begins to take on that look you know until you may not have known it as a younger person to if you but later on
you can see it you can read it
ah in the i'm seventy five list of elements or dharmas that there's one element called our vision up the rupa which is the subtle form and it's a material it's some in the material realm these are the
kind of traditional list of experience human experience divided into the seventy five elements or dharmas
and ten or eleven of them are in the material realm there i organ the capacity to see in here and so forth and here bulls and syllables and smells and then the eleventh one is average snappy rupa which is subtle subtle material realm which is
ah the effect that you're thinking and actions
have on your material body and mind that show up you know later on so abraham lincoln was
he knew about average snap the hoop i guess
also the effects of the not necessarily one's anger or bitterness or those kinds of actions but also receiving the precepts are being ordained these also have subtle effects that can will show up later on physically materially
so these some hindrances that are mistaken for things to seek after separate us great wealth and great
intelligence great beauty
ah these separate us from the human realm and in the human realm we suffer and we know the suffering of others we can feel the suffering of others and can
we can generate a feeling of wanting to help others now this semester i mentioned narrow zaki roshi gave a series of talks and one of them he really spoke about the kind of essence of buddhist practice which is that we are not separate buddha buddha
a or
but the buddha mind and sentient beings are not separate they are one thing this is one of the main things he talked about and second thing he talked about was when this is understood or along with the practice and understanding and steady of this comes and
rob anderson mentioned this
our last week i guess when he spoke because it was very striking talked about the burning heart of eagerness to help sentient beings so this along with this understanding of not being separate
comes naturally a a desire and eagerness
to help other beings
and this is in the human realm that this arises
understanding the suffering of other beings have wanting to help them
and this doesn't depend on one's capacities are once great great or lesser capacities capacities what it depends on is one doing one's best to help you don't have to be some
very accomplished person you just do your best with pure heart
so i have a story that i wanted
to tell you that been wanting to tell for a long time and finally this seems like in terms of the three considerations that seems like the time is right i've had it on a list of things to talk about in lecturer at some point and today's the day
i am i've been having this difficult who was my eyes i have a kind of chronic difficulty with my eyelids getting red and all and the latest treatment is too
put a washcloth a warm washcloth on my eyes and then scrub my eyelids with baby shampoo and while i've been doing this i
can't help remembering all the testing that have been done on also bunnies mostly rabbits who don't tear their eyes don't tear and so they used rabbits to test what might be irritating to the human eye
so every time i do this i'm very grateful to this johnson's baby shampoo which
remember that commercial oh baby baby they'll be no more tears with johnson's baby shampoo or now get to use it and it's true there are no more tears but i have tears when i remember these bunnies these bunny rabbits so this is a story about
a wonderful rabbit that is from the book watership down which probably meant many have you read it was a bestseller for long written by richard adams and this is the story about the rabbit was kind of a mythical
rabbit named l or iraq how many have you read watership down
so there are many stories in the book about lri row and this is just one
so elara is a little bit like a coyote figure he tricked king guys in and took his lettuces ah and this really annoyed the king and he vowed that he would get back at l a railroad his people
and he captured one of lri was friends rab scuttle and lri well i figured out a way to dig them out he tunneled in and got him and took them away and king dies into that does it i'm going to get our era and so he took his whole army over to where the warren was and
placed army soldiers that all the different holes so that the rabbits could not get in or out of the holes they could maybe get out snatch a handful of mouthful of grass get back in but dumb
the soldiers might be there they might get killed if they did this
an l or i've tried to run out and grab a grass and bring it back in but pretty soon the people l or people began to get very weak and began to starve because they didn't have enough food in l arrive didn't know what to do and he wanted to help them very much any thought and thought and decided
he would do anything to help his people as the days went by you do anything
so he thought i had even make a bargain i'd even make a deal with the black rabbit of inlay
and and he decided that's what i'm going to do and he called the people together and he said i'm going to go to the black rabbit of inlay if anybody has power brecht the black rabbit of inlay does tip to help save that my people
so he told them he was going to escape and they would make a commotion at some of the holes and draw off the king's men
ah and that's what they did in these rabbits fought very hard and several of them lost their lives
but it drew the attention of king dies and men and l areva scooted out the back with wraps get along with them and out and down the ditch and away went anywhere in a long long way and it was nighttime and he went farther than anybody had ever gone before and they came to a place where there was no
grass it was just rocky
and it was dark and cold and they didn't know where they were
and then they heard a voice saying what are you doing here elvira and right next room there was a rock what he thought was a rock
but it was the black rabbit of inlay as cold as stone and as still as liking and he had very afraid and jumped down into this whole but a black rabbit of italy was right there too and he said why have you come here l or era
elvira said i've come to give my life in exchange for my people
the black rabbit of finley said oh bargains bargains bargains there isn't a day that goes by where there's some mother who saying take my life spare my kittens life or some chief are some officers saying please take my life and let my chief get well from his wounds bargains bargains bargains
sarah said please please take my life my people are starving
and the black rabbit of inlay said you know there's nothing i could really do for you l or era but l ryoma is why you have something to eat our i ever knew that if he ate something there
the black rabbit of inlay would understand his thoughts could read his thoughts and would know he was trying to trick him some way
so he wouldn't eat anything but he said well maybe we can play bob stones to the kind of a gambling game and l i was said well let's do that okay he could play bob's turns just about as well as any rabbit could
so he said all right i'll play and if i when you take my life in exchange for my people's life and the black rabbit of inlay said in if you lose i'll take your whiskers and your tail and then they began to play bob stones and the black rabbit of inlay was a magnificent player of bob's johnson
he won
and so elvira was taken away and they took off his whiskers and his tail
have you felt terrible but he wasn't going to leave he was free to go at any moment but the black rabbit couldn't keep him there against his well but he didn't want to leave
then they play it again and this time the black rabbit of inlay said ah
if you lose i'll take your ears and he said all right all do that and the game this time was now bob stores but who could tell the scariest story the black rabbit of inlay was first and he told such a horrible terrible terrifying story that lri red rabbit scuttle which is huh
huddled in the corner they couldn't bear it and afterwards or era felt he couldn't his story wasn't anything he couldn't tell him so they took a rivalry and cut off his years
well mean well grabs gotta went to go get food from outside of that place and also some dock leaves you know docker those green long leaves to put in place of his ears
and elvira heard these people talking and he went out to where they were up by these different pits and he said what are these places and they sent oh these are where the worst things for rabbits are mange and sicknesses and in this pit over where the white blindness the illness called the way
blindness is and if you get the why blindness not even a enemies will touch you know you just die out and fields and enemies will just leave you alone in l with thought ah now i know what to do and when they weren't looking he jumped into that if he plunged himself into that pit of the white blindness
and he stayed in there and they could get him out
and he stayed in there as long as he possibly could thinking i think now i'm probably infected with the white blindness and i'm in a leave and go to king dies and army and that's all save my people
i wonder how long it's gonna take for the illness to come on you know rabbit's gotta you'd better steele told him to stay far away from him and he started to leave because he could have left at any moment started to head back
for his warren
and as he was going along heat
he didn't have whiskers are tail and ears of us going along towards us worn and he heard a voice say where are you going elvira for a quiet voice was the black rabbit of inlay he said i'm going home you said i could leave whenever i wanted to i'm going home i'm going to destroy
roy the king's army and save my people
and the black rabbit said elvira you know how the white blindness or he told them i i went into the pit and i have the white blindness i'm going to infect the army you said elara do you know how
sickness the white blindness has spread from rabbit to rabbit
elara stood still he didn't know he didn't say anything the black rabbit said the white blind is spread by fleas that that live at the ears of rabbits and jump from one rabbit to another
and you have no eres el ara you only have dock leaves and there's no fleas that will live in dock leaves
and at this point elvira
fell to the ground he lost all his strength at that point and fell to the ground tried to move but he couldn't helpless
knowing that he had failed
and at that point the black rabbit of inlay said this is no place for a rabbit like u l or era this is a cold warren
and you are rabbit with the brave heart in a brave warm heart and spirit you're a nuisance to me you go home i'll save your people for you and don't you dare ask me when it's going to happen because there's no time down here and cool so it doesn't matter anyway and they're already saved
an l or era
left and went back and there's more adventurous of bill driver when he gets home
so this ah
warm heart this burning heart burning with eagerness to help
other beings
ah this i felt as the heart that nagasaki rocio was talking about and it doesn't take
great capacity it it takes doing the best you can just doing the best you can in your circumstances and you don't have to be perfect you know and wonderful intelligence you know moses i just read it was reminded of moses had a speech impediment
and to think that's great catches him up on the mountain you know
so it doesn't you don't perfection is not what's necessary here we're talking about purity of heart and purity of heart includes even with your impure
ah trying you know that may miss it may fail even with that your purity of heart will come through
so the the binder the buddha mind and sentient beings is not different
this is one of them is the main teaching a buddhism and yet unless we practice
we can't access this unless we study and practice steady i mean for study all inclusive study of body and mind not just reading text certainly unless we
practice this we can't access this realization that we are already buddha buddha and sentient beings are not different
so
talking about it you know misses the mark really
the the word to togheter which means the thus come one
the best come one is such this and if you start to talk about section as you pretty much miss the mark how can you talk about such this
and yet
we
we say something if the time is right and if it's true
if we feel it's true and of benefit and the time is right we give it a goal you know you say something
but speaking about it mrs actually misses the mark
and this is the way we are kind of always missing the mark
with true heart with brave spirit you miss the mark
and when we're in the human realm the rabbit realm we are we feel for our people who are starving or we we feel this we want to try and help because we're not separate from them
ah or interdependent we we feel the rabbit that the not little absence of tears of the rabbit

so i'm
i want to close with them
a story that illustrates this this is something i i heard over the radio and pierre when i was driving along think it was st patrick's day and there was a
program of irish tenors are sinking beautiful beautiful beautiful voices and they sang songs that i had heard before but this time they really came in with their full force like the the sawyer danny boy oh danny boy the pipes the pipes are calling and i realized it
was the song of a young man who has been called to war and never really thought about i thought it was as girlfriend was saying he was leaving and but no it's it's this young man probably full of energy in life and the pipes are calling and they're bringing him away and the sorrowful feeling
being called off to war and following that was a more contemporary song written by
the man who sang the song himself i believe know it was someone else who wrote it he just saying it and the name of the song was
good bye love there's no one leaving and it was written on the occasion of
this man bringing his mother to a nursing home his mother had alzheimer's disease and it got to the point where he just couldn't take care of her any longer he and his sister she couldn't be tracked and she was going to hurt herself from do something that would cause harm to herself or others so they they finally decided
she had to go to a nursing home and when he brought her there
he was holding her hand and they were waiting in the waiting room
and
he could feel all the fear and anxiety in her hand she didn't exactly know what was happening but he could feel how fearful she was and he hated to leave her there he didn't want river but he had to leave her there and while he was holding his her hand he remembered
when he had been a little boy and his mother had taken him to school the first day of school and he had been very afraid and holding tight to her hand and she brought him up to the steps of the school and assured him and left him there and when she left him she said goodbye love there's no
one leaving
so he remembered that as he held his mother's hand leaving your goodbye love there's no one leaving
you know
in the tsongas very very beautiful stunner
voice so this this understanding goodbye love there's no one leaving
is the understanding of how we are all connected and how we love each other so much and this connection
the pain of the connection that the point at which we connect is the point at which were separated
and there's pain there
and yet the truth of it is that we are connected and there's no one leaving

thank you very much

just don't see anyone would like to talk about it ask about her bring up
it really know i'd really love to do today is here everybody's leave i don't know if you know each other enough it i see many of you every week and i can't put the names and faces together with up your rate just literal activity short skirt
he stood up
hello
stella
and
your jam
priscilla andrew
this fire

he favors and forty sally's live free
has everybody at the story and oaks go him and he was benched chick
virginia tobacco erin
thank you i really appreciate that thank you very much now did you know each other so when you know each other isn't
so
yeah may get to know each other's names we could do that in recent history
i mean we like yes i'm the am not thinking about are starting to think about what you're talking about companies the guy
raising them not for the viral
really was
and the about separation and fame systems that point this point where survive through and that's where is invaluable
no it

ha
what what i was trying to bring up is that the m
places that we touch other people
i suppose physically mentally and emotionally i guess in always are also the places that we
our
ha separated at the same time but if we can touch then we can separate and mean if you can't touch it's because it's already
like i can't touch my nose with my nose because it's already being itself you know totally so then the catching the fancy it's the booby traps such as much stuff you got her life for the the movie finally a ohio
well that's what i'm trying to say if it has this quality of both you know it's
it's
our life our human life includes this kind of recognition of the one of the most painful things we have in our life is the belief and the recognition that were separate from others and so the place if
where we come together is the place where we're also separated now
what you say about the booby prize to get
how i found in the first k-pop
has a rabbit was hiring heart
heart know that i thought
a surprise
for minds thought she wanted me to say
that with one of sounds site
if you're at the point where you're feeling the pain out of detection and that means you it isn't universe to there is a separate but is the what would you said he got the prize what do you see a surprise he got
how type
oh the price was that he was an example is gets for you celebrate with
not funny
and what do you think that alibi was prize was for himself and mean he didn't know i told destroy them
do you think that he received something or did he
when you're saying that they are some people are being to just like to do have as to act
instead of fresh and life
yeah he is one
what he received if you look at the story is be more pain you know he got
first of those whiskers and his tail and for rabbit know when he was going back with white blindness and he kept bumping into things because he had no whiskers and the whiskers for rabbit are like antenna you know believe
so he was in a lot of pain actually
you know it's the the irony you might say irony is
see the lra i think of as bodhisattva and body selfies enlightenment being because we have to coffee
is a being who
ah puts on the armor it's called the armor's
we that's the image the armor of
getty is your whiskers cut off your tail the your ears you know and then your whole key at the and when he plunged into that hole he was willing to even rock you know possess with that deceased wife blindness would do you just your whole body which is rot so he just received more and yeah the cups
nasty to receive more and more and more and more and more pain you know
so here is that a prize is that what is that
it's actually
that's one of the things about taking up the bodhisattva vow or the footy subtle way of life is
you know you find that your heart
enclosed who actually your posture your physical posture might even be like this you see people sitting like this and they're just really protecting this area here and if you adjust their back and you run your hand down and you to collect this is like the burst into tears it's like even to just open themselves that much like a quarter of an a
inch half an inch to open what it feels like is such pain most or and physical pain to in the there so for the body submit to put on the armor you open an open open you just open and there's no end to the opening
but it's not like you then get to be
kind of up above it all or something if you'd just get more you go into that you get white blindness you know you go into the pit
so
so there's this
but the funny thing is about it is that it's like that's the only thing you want to do if like to not help his people who cannot do what he could that would have been even worse to let it just happened to let them starve and have him sit there and starve with them which might have been a less painful situation than the white blindness
or some other kennedy would have been worse because of this feeling of connectedness to not honor that thoroughly with your whole body and mind so
so this point at which as you i can do this again the point at which you feel the connection to people is also it's like gum
we because of our apparatus of our psychological and physical apparatus we do see things outside of ourselves i do see you sitting over there and new you are a harpoon right you go even go home and i'm going to use a mouse train
and yet
that's that's a mistake and the belief in that this is the sin of buddhism if if there is such a thing as sit in buddhism is the belief that were separate and there's pain in that belief of our separateness and then and there's also pants i understand but in acting on
ah the knowledge that and you know you would have to act on the knowledge that you just it arises that you have to do something for the for those rabbits he didn't have to think about it it's just arises so
so this is the m
and this kind of the quality of our life it's like that
it it has this
it has that in it you know and and yet that's what makes everything so precious that's what makes if you're
i'm close to that if you're close to that then you know having tea with your mother or whatever it is this very precious you know and the first vegetable of the spring is very precious and everything has its own life that comes forward
to you
so it's within that context i don't know to that more than agreed
i just want to follow up on earth is because our houses considered talk to their cars removed up
i so carry on my mind of a movie i saw last night called the priest
i could work plot and in five voters vs knows this is very much my mind is about this is john crichton was or neighborhood and enough
i did i e there's a special fortunate girl with package has been repeatedly molested find her father and that her mother's totally unaware of this is obvious the surfaces destroying the girl has refused to have a fish talk review submission and advised part so tries to confront the father and the for
other just totally
laughs out of has been a says the cancer think start on that the rebels into the heavens power of the drug of the priests can break the bowels of of
reagan information professional
ah so the priest was watch this growth is she's like a some classes using just like progressively more destroyed by the quite as yesterday on a virtual device discovery that she's she's a remote spot on a the other close to freeze hopes to be good and now he's
drogon workers
his own experiences but dumb being in love with this band being sexual about a ban i'm struggling with in a catholic priest
and i guess
found out and it just changed and a probably ashamed in the newspaper and and a half truncation use churches and a church ridicules on others some of the movies once you weren't used to be fast and have condition has walked out and this is just
receiving all the scorn of use
at all
the girl is it isn't that has been probably seen the girls of the congregation
she just
what's up to him and he sees her engage earned on all our problem or a movie this is this shows how completely heartbroken is about team is growing and to prevent demos have in store and and there's just a single one of the active where where he sees her
and because it was the shame and pain and humiliation and doubt and some is catherine he's able to to to see her pain and the future complete compassionate love of a before and life was her for him because of of a person's of a vehicle have been of views
and broken and helpless against them i'm telling you she's a opposed to just see his pain and don't feel compassion for him to have it is with with him breaking up crying and she just holding them though
it was obvious okay that i'm sorry emotions you them perfect sort of group of particular brother
is it was one of us to moving scenes ever seen a paypal yet that active about the human condition and then it just saw it twice in two or three sentences just like him
you feel that pain if you've dragged down that think is horrible nobody wants to feel that pain of what point is to listeners perhaps but if you get to the space the possibility is to be like you said to be open to other people in a way to narrow you outside of have had a personal page
it was an incredibly gripping movie her hostel trip to new home i put a new life and how it was because pain and use down a way to to to
express compassion rather than okay and how did you have experience of pain first before you can have compassion for numbers
well said thinking
you know how to blow five sort of the
haha now one of them
i just really
right
the rabbit
right any punches space
there any other era didn't hear
it looks like you
i met their cutter i tried to help somebody say no
what should accept
well i see it a little bit different so i'll i'll just say how i see it at the end there at he tried to the black rabbit inlay was like all powerful and fear and darkness it's it's this dark
figure from the underworld and he's down in the underworld where nothing's alive really with the black gravity of inland so he tries but he's really all powerful who has to beat him above stones and then he tries to tell the better story and it's like he has no power they really except for this his heart you know which is braveheart
in his so
so he lose and he loses all these things but at the end even when he pees on his way back without his whiskers you know he's honest way back kind of bumping into things thinking he's carrying this disease that will save and at that point the black rabbit of inlays says quietly where you go no rarer it's like the black rabbit in there is
moved by this rabbits efforts even though he failed he was just like failed failed failed and still he kept trying something so at the end the only thing that really saved as people was the fact that he was willing to sacrifice everything to throw himself in
the pit of the black but the way blindness which the black rabbit of inlay i don't think he'd ever seen such
such a heart as this and that's when he said
you know if you don't even have ears to carry the disease you can even do that you've failed again you know and at that point when we're now the ravages he can have lost it there he just sunk to the ground
that's when the black rabbit of inland was moved to actually do what he could have been like that he could have saved the people
ah so
he did save his people it was through that through his efforts that looked like failing it looks like failing over and over in one continuous the stake
but damn it's that kind of effort that when we see it when you see that and recognize it it's like
it can change your life can change your life
where do you think
it is desert
this of
no never
it's hard to you
well that may be so that may be so that there's no one who sees it but the black rabbit of inlay will see it you know
hi
if if one does it in order to
get patted on the back like boy that was really really valorous you know you were never seen such about it's like if you're doing it in hopes that you'll hear this praise coming over you like honey it's that's not a pure heart that's actually fame and game it has to be
fame and gain looking for fame and game that's the kind of buddhist
if you sit thousand for fame and gain or to get anything to get goodies it it's you're going away from it you sit for the sake of sitting that's all so so
and that's and to live your life in that way with not necessarily just traces were doing the best your absolute best that you can in whatever that ideas for the circumstances that's enough and that's
it doesn't matter if anybody notices that are not because the buddha notices or you know your true heart knows and it it will hit the mark speak of not hitting the mark that will hit the mark
when you have it made me think of birth
the thousand the hoodie stuff from and i wondered if effects green when i say those vows like after the lecture it feels like there's so
i mean innumerable and yet i'll do them anyway so i wondered effects effects related or with them like is pure pure effort
i think they're exactly really you know the body vows that will you be say beings are numberless i gotta save them
delusions are inexhaustible i vow to put it onto them dharma gates are boundless i run enter them the buddha ways unsurpassable i vowed to attain it so or enter it so here you have these vows that grammatically speaking are impossible innumerable i vow to do it you know i mean it doesn't syntactic
lee or whatever it's just their non sequitur is oxymoronic or something anyway
you put these two things together is impossible know but if you said and and that's why they're the body south of us because they are impassible and you're going to do it anyway if you said as the beings are about three billion in the world now it's theaters about one to mean i vow to save you know or delusions uk
mount up my delusions there i've got about one hundred i've ah to put an end to them it's like it's not big enough it can't contain your spirit actually your spirit of this burning hardy can't to actually put a number on it aura so so too
to acknowledge that we say in new you know and inexhaustible that's where you are that's that's really who you are that's closer to it than you know beings are
am trying to make it finite
but then
and actually to make you know that song to dream the impossible dream the and and what's that that son
that much unless there's a zen master new york
this is what twenty years ago in the seventies and i heard they had for a lecture he saying that song
well
i think it was a eight or shimano
the dream the impossible trivial because he had come to american and found this saga with surge of the bodhi stuff robot
haha also used up there you know which i think the western kind of people in assembly thought this is really hokey but for him thought it was like i am i'm even writing this really just pathetic that rep started with that i'll ever have a psychiatric institute
so
so those vows
way it's like beyond their inconceivable may inconceivable kinds of files and that
that
that's what can kind of reach reach where we need to put our effort
mean i have to move my hand because they haven't been and i am only seen as good there i was thinking about the the watership down store again i couldn't help but think that if the rabbit had in a sort of being sort of responsible for as people end their suffering because of the beginning hear your men
sure he was a trickster and that sort of started the king's reason for wanting to get to get people to me and the reason for the starvation because that's how i heard the story and so then that started the rabbits track towards saving them sacrificed himself so i wonder if
you think that the rabbit would have gone and safe and sacrificed if he hadn't perhaps felt a sort of sense of responsibility or consequence to his own actions i mean it was his actions that created the problem eating of and i wonder if that prompts a lot of people to sacrifice or empathize
because they have a sort of connection to the suffering our they are the cause of suffering
yeah oh that's interesting
amazon
well
i think it or reivers case the young
you know the king was trying to hoard various patches of lettuce and stuff for and not allow them to him he felt they should be able to have answers so he ends up taking it know
so yeah i mean maybe he did feel like he was bite consequences of his own actions as they got and he got so mad anyway you know skill and means papaya skill in means there's some
in buddhism there's
here you can have compassion but if you don't have skill in skill and means this is the term if you're not
skillful in expressing it you make more trouble you know it can make travel so so maybe that's true maybe he felt it was because of his own on skillfulness to the guy got so mad or something and in terms of other people but he was also king and he was a or the leader of these people's
aw
he felt the responsibility regardless he felt a responsibility getting them their lettuce and all of it now
in terms of other people whether we i think there is an element of that i mean i think people who like were involved in the civil rights movement and all felt their contribution to racism in this country and feeling they had to do something personally even if they lived in the north are you know they had to go down and or
you know other things homelessness or just i do think people feel personally that there they are involved by what products they buy and like
i think this is part of social activism that the spirit people actually feel personally
they don't feel like they have clean hands you know and they're going to help somebody else can take care what they actually we actually feel i contributed to this my way of thinking my actions my driving car her m or whatever is helping to create this new district
the story about the rather remind him on the chalk and tail yeah ah
but the revenant throws itself on the fire yeah
oh
or it's the same kind of thing is a sacrificing his body for to feed others and
it's it's very moving i remember food schrader told the story and lecture couple maybe the last time she's over anyway recently agree and is very very moving that there's something about the actress throwing oneself you know this in the story when he throws himself into the pit this
there was something about the throwing of oneself and throwing oneself on the fire and i think psychologically or emotionally we can actually throw ourselves into our life in that way doesn't have to be on a pyre or pit but like even when we bow you know
there's a monterey you could say there's a little phrase you can say when you do full bows you know we do full prostrations plunging into the bow that suddenly you could say to yourself
when you do these prostrations you go down you plunge yourself into the value plunge into your world you don't hold back anything you just throw yourself into your reality which know
you know well maybe i'll save a little for later you know you just throw yourself in and if you do that as you many people or cook a meal or sit at your desk you know you just throw yourself into your life the best you can you know and whatever your capacity as the best you can
so there's something about throwing oneself i think this that really hits home
how can i ask how to swim
has this been rounded up the same more i don't know which tasks or for us
in fact
ah
well
how do you know how do you i'd like to hear from you actually how do you know when something's right for you what what do you what are your
how do you do it you know would you be able to see i know how our experiments on something starts to rain me and take away from my hypothesis by
marcy me my arm for connection on it involved in my connection and by runs in my heart and then not smack me
one
notice the on my officers that can in the back onto what feeds much my fault
so you actually it's a physical you can actually physically feel drained and losing energy and disconnected and murcia is a physical manifestation when it's not like cream physical and also
a men's wives and
that's right
ah rum involved is something that and comes back is more energy to tell him with and it's something that raised me and as expected down
yeah
so i think there are these kinds of things i mean some people
have a very fine tuned
psycho physical being you know when something's when it's wrong or they're like almost allergic to situations or people they get sick or they get you know and i think for those people were very sensitive and that way they can actually they can't bear to be in situations that arch
that aren't right for them you know in some way that they can't handle other people were very strong constitutions you know like a type people are i mean this is kind of popular psychology but not not even psychologists his medical stuff too but in whether people were very strong
constitutionally and they have they just kind of keep going even long after it's really wrong you know until they have a heart attack or or there in a divorce or so i think you know this how do we
find out what is it would
i mean the question is really what is our practice you know so for many people on and
you know if you haven't those of you here who haven't done this yet i'm i'm assuming many of your interested in this if you have a sitting practice there's some practice where you spend time on a regular basis just sitting down quietly you know this can be
and practicing with what is it that best comes you know the to target as such as what is it that's arising what is events coming up for you you know and not going out to him fiddle and make it work and go here and they're just sitting there
and seething
the myriad things coming forth you know what is it what is it that thus comes
so
if you have a practice self asking that because you don't necessarily know you might think you're supposed to go this way you know steve went to give a lecture about wrong turnings and detours you know is the way it may look like a wrong turn by him but it's actually just exactly right for you but you have to give yourself
awesome
you have to take care of yourself in order to discern like i say it's not a given that you can be able to discern is to i mean we all know
what can happen when we
you know i mixed up and confused and the choices we make it
so that's one way to go sit still
here i am i'm sitting for a while are accredited breeder who was or
where's your own work
the purpose of it is what are my pocket i stood and to come up our lives queens i think become normal anyway if you found more minorities bedroom and stuff i think go home and harm anywhere
ninety three i'm going to figure so something a full
i don't have the
so stuff account on all a longer
court on another american
i'm unique insights to why designed for use by for an ongoing series of ongoing
let's start
so you're brought on this
i'm not going to be worn i guess everyone feels that when searching for you
ah just you know another
a
so you're feeling some frustration about sitting there having a regular practice feel like this what i want to do and this is what's recommended and i'm and yet it feels like the same old kind of
what do they call it a monkey mind same kind of stuff that there's no no insight know
because i know it was my i i hear lectures i was just a know where is that in all this came up for them when own you know a great just going to happen to be working around with new starters
well i am
this is not unusual even though other people in are today
i think one of the difference disease this i remember everything else a garbage i entered my mind the garbage is like this was this goes on all day long you know and then but when they sat down they realized
since the contents of my is garbage become that was an insight and it sounds like you had they didn't say to someone like
or maybe not but i feel that about when you when you sat down or when you're sitting that oh this is the way my mind works it's running it's doing this it's thinking about this that the other all the time
was that a new cut and even if you know i'm a pilot or our planet everything you know me everything in our guard sector refinery so i mean i realized i do not only on anyway and then when i stood argued was great you i are i'm not dreaming different than when i don't want to do so
yeah
ali are more aware of the package or during that when you're shooting course was wondering the jailer
i'll probably more solid and ninety day but learning the thought has crossed my mind forever
why weren't quantity all the company often we've basically we'd better by me primary key
you know an indo hands and she's ammunitions universal admonitions for does one of the things that it says there's some
upon preparing your space know at the sight of your regular spot spread out think manny and place a cushion above it
do not think good or bad do not administer pros and cons
cease all the movements of the conscious mind the gauging of all thoughts and views so in some way the admonition is
this regular way of thumb gauging and good and bad and all that you kind of
let's leave that door you know and then you sit down and
you know this what is this that thus comes this question
is the backward step
the thinking of not thinking thinking now i'm thinking so if you if you're sitting and asking what is this that's coming up
question will kind of beat you to the punch of
good and bad planning gauging it's because the question comes first what is this so it is it may look like the same stuff but because you have this question what is this that thus comes what is this planning stuff what is it
dumb it's not the regular way is not the usual way
so i don't know if that's even that's the kind of meditation instruction bureau yeah it gets there first the question of what is this gets there first before the see tomorrow i'm going to do this i don't forget to call so on so i got an editor
the question what is this will get there first
now another thing that i mean some people are very very busy doesn't have a lot on their mind like
the director test the heroine's was given permission to keep a little notebook under his bhutan because juries us and he beat think i got the fire crew they've gotta be told about data or i have to call you know these were things that really aren't stopping do you think it's an aga remember that regular going video push it out
mind that strangers and ultra not remember what responses you know what i mean you know the you so you might mean you make he was given permission to system to crash through to keep a notebook many jotted down called fire department and then he could let go of it you know go back to city but otherwise he'd have to i can't forget it can't forget so you might want to do that just
that might be another thing to help clear i think dropped are three guys the for my stuff is good for me i push it out there yeah but for becoming to that over your memory order
i just want to add one more thing which is
this
everyday you know this phrase everyday mind is the way
whatever is coming up in zazen that's what's coming up at thousand and and it's buddha dharma it's putting down at that's what is that this comes just more bodhidharma to help you wake up so you don't have to think that this is gobbledygook that shouldn't be that i gotta get rid of it just on
or it and allow it it's okay part of the effort of saying it shouldn't be there i should be doing something else i should be more concentrated
just feeds it just feeds very personal language
yeah yeah
yes i realize we're a little girl
i think the haiku that i was really last night that i can the master was that
here's a when he had a very profound enlightenment his poem was ah what a marvel
i draw water from the well i carry you word
right exactly
thank you
our one to while i was just thinking and regard to what you were saying that back to the rabbit story that the really beautiful point that story was when he was willing to accept defeat
now and i think in our practice oftentimes it's really hard to accept
now we're not progressing in a way that we show there were not ending our minds in a way that we should do it and know we're judging ourselves and one of the things i thought about very early on was that because my my my it really is after the races all the time i just that while i'm just not going to worry about it
recorded and discuss what happens i'm going to it's going to be like it's on a screen i'm just letting it go by in them
and not attaching myself to it and we are you think of it as my mind necessarily but just as something that's right into my head and and the rabbit when he accepted to pay
he
was given the way to say is his situation because that was the thing that would get out the other four hundred fall down know and resolve all energy current like he was to me it was willing to accept the fact that he tried and tried and try
and that he was beaten and he was even able to set that is like failure is an integral part of success and and then when in order
for the right thing to finally happened you know things that were so scared to risk you know failure
those things are just as their own part of the whole picture that allow the things that we enjoyed happen
next to us for the antelope here
just a point information you searched someone's admonitions for sitting and i didn't hear the name of the he has a masters dogan all zingy dogan and
he wrote john
it's ninety
little chapter it's called fascicles ninety of them called the treasury of the true dharma i and one of those little sections is
am an universal admonitions for ourselves in called for kansas mg and we we chanted
in in one of the certain memorial service and when the a basis as she was your they chanted it for evening service and i think in zen monasteries who zheng he is is chanted every night in the evening last period himself in at night and enchanted nothing and we have it in our chance book and it's it's been translated many times
different places
yeah there's a myth that i've been trying to understand set for life fact i think is mostly that you for myself in my stuff more than anything possible entire like yeah well i think it's mostly that mask and and have all kinds of elements exciting arrows and
and the end of it is that i'm thinking about is what finally moves
era's you have like up
i want to tell her story that that side he loses errors because she she she breaks the commandment not to look at at her husband
she's a his and she's moral and she sees as she shines a light at hand and and that she she falls totally love when she sees as well and and she is set by aphrodite for tasks as she completes them with the aid she gives up every time and as the aid of an eagle eight acts and serve students
all this help and she keeps going and she goes all of a the underworld and comes back out in the forest chest and glass task is to bring this casts his task of beauty ointment for aphrodite and she opens it thinking that maybe or something in this that well i guess for arrows that would pass them have power and
it it it knocks your unconscious forever
and it's that is that her helpless sleeplessness forever now is what moves firing arrows to come down and lake or off and she said name god and the bride or five and gone forever so it's that's what that's nice i've been trying to understand and that's even it's such a powerful miss it when they miss their master masculine that guy
i stay at least two an act that so i know it has a as working at the difference of masculine feminine and my own i want to eat sleep apnea sweet and yeah you
that they there's there's a real elements me of what is that that you hit that wakes up from your conscious and so that didn't make me think of that he moved that a black rabbit in moved to have same thing we met you having the areas be moved by psyches and it's done everything and now
she's completely health was and that's what has become become trapped
a nice connection between you
here she swoons there at the end he liked meant that after she opens up yeah and it's the back production rate and
as the and much guess
let it
have a question so in in real life since i haven't noticed any flight buddy
is there some higher power looking over us waiting to be moved before we get our cookie or is it the comfy from them back from south africa
it isn't that we have to be willing to just give up everything in order to have everything that were using
mom let's see
replica
hmm
if it's helpful for you to have a relationship with
an energy or something that you feel is responding to you in on than that's that's useful that's how free
and you know
sound
practices around having such a relationship with that energy which
if you put it out there separated from you that may be useful at times or you may think of it this is just my own energy i'm going to put it out there to look at and study it but it's me it's my job so that may be a helpful way to work
the second thing you said about giving up a every orissa just giving up a everything in order to have to get anything
i
bethesda
wow that feels kind of right a hat to you know and i don't know how that feels to use the still scarier
but when you say give up everything you know some people i get letters that says i'm shaving my head i'm a vegetarian i'm coming too sensitive forever
and i don't know what i'm up
happened because people get ideas you know about what giving up everything is and it's completely and idea of something and it's very connected with
gaining something often you know
so i always very wary about that kind of thing that giving up everything is just an idea of giving up only what is it like to right now everybody give up
our idea that we know what's coming next you know like right now and to be in the mind of what is it that thus comes right now well
that's the giving up of everything that you can do right now you don't have to shave your head and everyday that's completely accessible now for everybody right now what is it
that's rising
in that state of mind you do give up everything you give up all your ideas about this that the other and what you who that person is you just wait for them to reveal themselves and they will because
it's coming forth right now so i think it's closer to that then you know being a hermit was the giving up everything because of the bodyshop for bonnie and to lose his ears and to yeah yeah but it's interesting also considers a trickster initially he said he was willing to just give up
i live and for some reason like that wasn't enough into lose his ears to his whiskers
yeah that would have been too easy get almost no to just say okay well i'll take your life in exchange for the people
that dumb black rabbit as he said bargains bargains everybody's always coming to me and say you know come on please take me and safe heaven too long time people are always doing it so he wasn't interested but the the degree to which he was willing to give up
you know
but yes have or for each person will be different that giving up you know but that the a the giving up right now of your ideas about the way things are in allowing it to come to you
may lead you to heavy
you know may lead you into realms you had no idea you have the capacity to go into
and may take you places you never knew you could go
and it may mean that you have your whiskers cut off it really might be met and someone was just telling me today about a young resistance jewish girl resistance fighter nineteen years old who the second world war two that went to israel to be trained to be a parachutist to pair shoot behind the lines into one
hungry to or yugoslavia to get to hungry and
and i was captured and killed by the nazis and you probably as a young girl had ever occurred to her you know
this would happen to her she's just living your life right but to have this to grow up being willing to give up everything meaning your ideas of how it's supposed to be a who that person supposed to be in the way it's supposed to go
it's like
it's
living this is living since being alive you know this is not stale
and you don't know what's right around the corner
so
yeah giving up everything
something i didn't understand the story
imagine that he wouldn't eat the food of of the black funny because his thoughts will be revealed also she had a pure heart and sure fuss is people why we be afraid of your melee that well you know this is where his tricks he had this trickster nature and he knew that blank
rabbit of italy was not going to save his people so how how's he couldn't get the black rabbit can do this so he didn't want the black rabbit to see what he was planning what strategy was going to be using her
like get had the black rabbit know what he was going to throw himself into the pit so he thought i mean he was just going to use all his willingness to do what he needed to do and he didn't want anyone knowing what he was he didn't know what he was going to come up with you so
it's killing means you know it's like he had to just like when you go into the underworld i mean per stephanie also went down the underworld and she did eat she ate the pomegranate seeds which is the fruit of the underworld and so she had to go back once she ate those she she had to go back you know had not eaten anything
she would have been free so there's something about taking in and to preceded them so can not each side you to call the very little and she's you makes basically very well in the extra or her a yeah yeah how and she got out and a great appointment yeah so there's something about going into the dark and
eating down there as fast as the
it was steady that bore with then all about them anyways it was skill and means i think more than that has pure heart was pure but how it was gonna get his get it accomplished she didn't money but he didn't know so
as my sister possess feel in means or skill and means skill in mean skill and your skill he means
did you have a hand them no one just share a japanese spiritual
remain open during the last time
