Traces of Fire: Zen Connection
Talk by Tmzc Leslie James on 2016-09-08
The talk addresses the experiences and reflections surrounding natural disasters, particularly fires, at a spiritual retreat, as a metaphor for exploring Zen philosophy, emphasizing themes of impermanence and community. It highlights Dogen's teachings on understanding the traces or imprints left by actions, both human and natural, in the broader context of Buddhist thought, and how these relate to the concept of interconnectedness within the universe.
- Dogen's Teachings on Traces: Discusses how traces or imprints from the past, referred to in Zen texts, influence present understanding and actions in a Buddhist context, portraying a path for spiritual investigation.
- The Fire Metaphor: Reflects on personal experiences with fires at the retreat center, using them to illustrate Zen concepts such as impermanence and the role of collective action in times of crisis.
- Buddha's Path and Traces: Explores how the search for the Buddha's path involves acknowledging and analyzing these imprints as a means of spiritual growth and understanding.
AI Suggested Title: Traces of Fire: Zen Connection
Good evening. Last time when I spoke to you out in the retreat hall, did I start off by saying that I felt poignant or something like that? You don't remember? Good. Maybe I didn't. Because tonight I feel kind of poignant. And I wasn't sure if that was a habitual feeling or a fresh one. So I don't know why. You know, it could be, here it is, the end of the summer, almost. And there have been so many summers, and they've all been different. This one is certainly different. This one is certainly different.
[01:02]
We've all been different. We've all been, you know, had a similar quality. There's that cheer, hip hip hooray at the end of the summer, the end of the closing the gate ceremony. There's the fact that so many times we've had some trouble closing the gate or opening the gate, opening the gate. I was thinking, you know, so here we are, you know. Fire, that's our thing, right? We're opening. In 77, my first big fire here. I was 30 years old. Totally amazing to me that I was 30 years old back then. Actually, that's not so amazing. What's amazing is that I'm now, you know, the 59. I'm the oldest person here. Here we are. until Keith comes in, you know, then I'm not fired.
[02:04]
And several of my other friends are a little bit older than me, but basically, those of us who live here, I think, is there anyone here who's older than 69? Good. So I was 30, and as I told you last time, I was, you know, really just in the trenches, clearing and shoveling and things. And then the next fire, I was 52 years old because it was 22 years between those fires. And for that one, I was the director for the second time and very large lightning storm. And it was many fires started in the wilderness. And a week later on September 15th, we were in the middle of work period having lunch and, you know, it looked like the whole forest service arrived. It was actually was the Forest Service and Cal Fire. They just came down the road bringing trucks and came in.
[03:06]
Maybe it was a sheriff. I don't really remember. Joe says the sheriff is in charge of it now. Maybe he was back then. Anyway, he came in and told us, you need to leave. The fire is like right. The fire is there. And it was before we drove out, which was about an hour later. You could see flames coming over from the Tony Trail. So we just called everyone together because we were all at lunch and it was, you know, the work period and just started connecting people with people to take them out. And we had to wait till all these trucks got in. Um, and as I said, I was the director, but Galen Godwin, who most of you know, was the plant manager. And we ended by just leaves them, you know, it was like, we said, so surprised can we all of a sudden have a few people stay to help get Tassahara ready, you know, show you where things are, because they were here to protect Tassahara, you know, help find the plywood, put up on the cabins and things, and they said, yeah, you can have 10 people stay.
[04:09]
So we had 25 people stay. And Galen and I had this very quick, like, who should be where, what should do, and it was really cool. It came back again several times, but it was big for a gameplay, you know, not for lunch or for the fireworks day. It never came to toss the car at that time. It helped that. It came all the time. I went a bridge to jail. Went a whispered away. It came when we were driving out. We could, uh, see it from line. It came that point, and over a couple times, second times, the vows, the ovies were, you know, really five per flaming truck, plus 80 away. ... [...]
[05:17]
And they came to dinner in the flats, and the inmates, they walked, and they don't think like, and so I can't remember whether the inmates ate handlers, you know, the first or second, and they didn't let the inmates eat with the king, just to eat the anybody. But we, the inmates, of course, came to dinner with everybody, and they came. sitting to their first dinner. And, you know, we had at the table, and most of them at the end had never deserved, which was coming out in the keys. These are, you know, non-violent. A lot of inmates, for them, were to earn time, were addicts for working. So one time, we'll tie another, and take care of getting them the tuition. It's like the keys, and most of them had never been out. In the wood gardener, they go through this.
[06:18]
To the lighting. To people that get around. They would like to speak of them. To the cook. These cookie. A cookie here. Here. Just like. So sweet. And you just like. Get bored. So they. Because the fire wasn't here. They were spinning around. Cookie. The. These. You know. And it was the end. Inmates. Some of the bunches got the flat. And said later. Cookies. Water. So that it's a more time when we feed. And the first thoughts for a cruise, I was just like, ready, but just all over. Let's just be in so Tassahara toward this, you know, let's, I, it's when that, I don't know, was nice, but maybe they went up like, they came 40, I just, and they pull, all of them, what's it? It's, it's, [...] it's. But some of them started to get the start. Well, go forward. We got a whistle because I don't make care of the fire and I'll get dinner with her. Also, they could keep hitting the poor.
[07:19]
But anyways, so just to see if I could get some of them that live around and start looking at the bar at this house. It was true how he took us plus some of the nice work. The morons, you know, started in the house to think it better. Anyways, and it's like they did something. We were in the uptown. We probably had the radio phone in the middle of it. And they opened the door for wire. And they opened the wire. So, I'm surprised people. So, like, we should. They cleared an awful lot of droplets on the wire. And that tree started up to the big bone. There's another set of things. They had a string actually. But yeah, I do not use what it is. I get a lot of that stuff. And honey, because they ain't this great start to eat a little desert behind the doors. Anyway, the TV, they got made. And boys were getting over on the rock set of them to be. And it was... Well. But they're so... And so they know that they start last. Don't you have some cousins?
[08:20]
Did someone seem to get a little strutting to do? Well, they were waiting for this. waiting for the fire. Fire to come. So they fought and finished the set in the, you know, do you want to take the tank? They started working in the computer function. They go there. Okay. And my camera didn't get so. One friend who was here, I remember right now, what hours that they go in charge of the kitchen. Phones. Situation. Well, they all turned out that they got us. They did not talk. Anyways, almost all I did was they did some of them came to... They didn't, but one inmate didn't get to come for lunch. And then they did, but the rest decided that they put them to work. There were all these. So they did boots lined up out on the, uh, and, you know, on the Angawa. Then we offered them, and they came in and, yo, did, uh,
[09:24]
saws and instruction. We saws and instruction. I don't remember thinking maybe long they were here. But, you know, because few of them were working eventually to the kitchen. They went away. We were starting to pay. And the fire become friendly. Went away. Took them and sew. So why am I, you know, telling you this stuff? Do you want to know, Ray? I wonder what we do here. So. Anyway, I think boot is 52. I'm going to boot it. Then for the The next was the star of my fin. The next fire was the summer of 61, right? No one except for sex. And here we are at a birthday end. So we're always a birthday end of this trace. Fascinating. Yeah, cool. But those who understand, how many of you have read this fast principle are really cool. Yeah. Yeah. A lot of you haven't. Do you like it?
[10:26]
Okay, fine. So this is really the best story, then. Best part. No one except to fish. Fish knows some of these fishes. I really like this. But when the fish are trying to go up things that don't include the dragon, no one gets a nose. Baby, if no one is the best part, there are birds. See it? N.S. Trace, have a-ing sense, is in the heart of all this, and, uh, taken. Sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss and likely no people who do not know why the child is not in a race, but they are determined they're in a race.
[11:37]
Unlike, you know, not walking them, because fish don't have liver, but there's like eating them and eating them. and the rip go through fish for the water and the gravel and come from thousands of ocean fish and the river going up the night river. I've seen that and uh, and it's the bar, but leave and toss our tree. Uh, we have to talk. It's in slap. That's why we have hands to take out of this. Eventually, we have to watch him take out these beautiful salmon and all these dams. go up there as people make, because the real steelhead or trout do so they sometimes come up, get to the drag, to the laser creep, but there aren't every comes in that many, that is the numbers, and in white, we have small creeps that seem, and they're so well big.
[12:40]
However, the steelhead, I thought, a bird can see the sea. be the trace bush muggles of hundreds of pictures of thousands of small birds are now shooting past in turn and flocks. They're just kind of like our traces of so many lines of large birds having flown south as fish north. Those traces may be even more evident in each other than the carriage tracks left on the road, Dogen, or the hoof prints of When a horse is seen in a brat, they have a sparkling feed. In this awesome way, a bird sees a bird's net chases a roof. That's a little harder for me to figure out. I know, but I don't know what to do. I mean, I'm not to know what would be happening with the field. It's kind of a little unitive. First, maybe, you know, let's talk again. You know what I'm about here.
[13:41]
One of the birds with a flower. Isn't this their fix that it's value? You know, who has we hear that? You know what's the end of that? What kind of out there is that? You know what's the end of [...] that? You know, missy. I concluded that they made some thoughts about us, but they didn't own it. Do you don't know? That's kind of funny. I know that there is food, such as large and small, although the neck and neck is less. They all know that they cannot even own trays to make the whole world to get to the park. Food is being a gross, so food and use trays. Buddhists like that you are not like these Buddhists.
[14:43]
You may wonder how to make a living life-time universe. You may wonder if Buddhists can walk like you. That's not enough. Not Buddhists. Three Buddhists we ask them that they are that look all good at this one. The person in the peace need trace and think is without them. Well, that Buddha's art's not a Buddha's eye. Those, because they don't have the Buddha's attributes, do not have a Buddha's eye. Well, hey, I know what a indigenous Buddha should look like, what a Buddha's going like. The attributes, no, not the art is rational, but the Buddha's eye is in. But if that could be Buddhist, it's neat. See, I have. The rest of the universe.
[16:03]
Or, you know, they're not BD. It's actually that way, by the way, they would play a cell. But, you know, they think of being that way because it's because of me, the rocks. And because of BD. Because of the Buddha. It's a fox because of this. And it's up to because of, oh, birds flying by, oh. And because of their, what are Buddha's parents. And that is because of these. So many, many, many, many are things. Depends, correct. And that potential is for them to be of Ben's outfit in a different way. It may not be apparent exactly. That is how they can be a bit of that, dependently on polarism. But that potential is being it.
[17:04]
That's how that being that I'm fed helping to mean is being the being invested the way they are being invested in the universe. But they're being that way just because trace is known and whether it is all who do not know long or short shadow should search out the trail or deep is also not grace. to illuminate your trace of the Buddhist path is accomplished. If by studying fine footprint the Buddhists, you should investigate whether pushing up the Buddhists is split. I think they should do. So maybe you've had that experience of looking at somebody and thinking this could be better. Now maybe If you've had that experience looking at yourself, the Buddha is saying, ah, it's not good enough.
[18:12]
We do not know she's a circle cat. So if Trace is a Buddha, then of course we have one, which has to do that we see. So if we know that way, you know, if we do not certainly know that way, also. What is everything you should say to those truths? Maybe sometimes we don't catch our truth. We want to call it the Buddhist path. But basically, what is the truth? What [...] is the truth? We saw a path here that a test could be a part of mine. We are a lot of us. What is the way? I mean, my path is that we have to pull it. It could always look or not. I think we're looking for an path.
[19:17]
In this tradition, we happen to call the Buddhist. But the Buddhist path is looking for path. The Buddhist path is looking for path. You know, we're looking for what is the path. Where is path? Maybe sometimes we don't have it. We want to call it. Buddha's path. Path. But because it follows. Will be basically what the schedule of benefits to this world that has it. Which obviously means that we're doing this help. What benefits in this is it? World. Being a health. Fire. Swiss. What is my reference to the path? Go off it, is it be? So, it could be innate, and here we are looking forking around a person, and, you know, what is it being of this? What would the fluctuated art footprint be? Is it? You know, these, so we could get kinda just as affected by things.
[20:20]
So if you go here, talk about our, uh, in our regular reply, if we're given a schedule, the bomb, So that's a lot of what could be friends are pretty much as experienced as just everyday life. You know, there's a wake up. Usually they are tomorrow. The Buddha, anything that special day happens in life. Or, uh, and then, uh, like, what? Because of the other things that were asked to happen, and then you're like, no, what, how to, what do with that, right? So, a big, you'd call this shit, because, what is a foot is print, foot is, see? Yes.
[21:22]
But, situation, how would you know, hence a whole, if you found a footprint feeling, footprint. As you can hear that, you know, so we just wouldn't toss up to get to our little bit of sticking for feedbacks for some of us. And what is my peak and path. People who have studied those is footprints. It's a little bit easier than to people who are studying everything. So, people, I suggest you study the footprints of if you ever have Something to study. What is my path? What is this? If you ever have a feeling that's happening, you go, you can say, why time do I care? But you have to be very careful with why questions.
[22:25]
Anything ever happens is they can lead into this long, slightly race. Out of your soul range, rather than wider. I care is really hot and positive. I care. And maybe I care. There's like a maybe I like it. Maybe it's strong. I don't want it. [...] Maybe if you hear it a little bit stronger if you're feeling it. Then the one you want to get. Then what is the wake-up bell goes, is this round? What is more clear? It's half-fine. Like if it's a hit or a positive feeling, and it's with some Buddha's near the trend, you might be inclined to just say, yeah, fine. A little bit stronger if you're feeling it right now.
[23:26]
It's here and you decide life because it But that makes me so happy. And then, you know, and then often it turns to be a Buddhist. So to see that footprint, because it's that person. Could this be a Buddhist therapy footprint? Is, um, it's really a little habit. It's like, if you can, or you can stay there with it. If you try to keep that question, and keep your people's heart open to. the feelings, that's it, that you're happy in the world. With that question, could this be, again, not the Buddhist footprint, but figure there's, if you have, because usually there could be when we're having a negative, um, a negative feeling. If it goes real, if [...] it goes real.
[24:26]
Because there's real information. This is in there. It's not about what's up. What is a Buddha? It's even easier to do this with what I am right now. Is there some way that if a negative feeling is not okay, it can be a Buddha. Because we don't like him with a positive. This is my feeling. The situation is not okay. It's of it. Or maybe definitely recently. Not question Buddha. I went out last Friday, as I told you. Could this be a Buddha? So it's going to go up to San Francisco to go close to a meeting. Buy it. And on just half Sunday, the question there. Maybe? So I was supposed to go up Monday morning. Could this be a Buddha's frame?
[25:30]
Or maybe it was even Monday afternoon. Could they? I was supposed to go up Monday afternoon. It was the Monday morning. I got Buddha work. The word that the meeting had been canceled. Could I be and be part of a Buddha working in this situation? Because she could. And those are even worse. The people who are all born evens include me in the email chain. Even when we... Emillin. They're all born. People, right? They're all born. They're all born. Yeah, hard. The Buddha couldn't even fall, and I'm not working and be there. And what's more, I'm such a big old Jewish. And in here, I work as a fire. And in the fight, the fire might be getting clearer anymore, and they don't include me in the email chain. That isn't happy. That isn't what I felt. I was irritated. What I felt was. And, uh, yeah, you know.
[26:33]
So I was irritated. I didn't get, you know, for a while. My, my, and, you know, various things, mostly, like, things worked out. And this time, like, when I was kind of like, that's going to go and all that. So, but it was a horror process. And then, oh, but working out, I had a couple phone calls with people. I wasn't happy. I was who, no irritated, noticed that I was irritated, encouraged me really to look at what was going on, which was not, even after I would notice my normal showing was saying, I'm part of myself, normally I didn't pretty good want to be, not. You know, I'm irritated, so you say, we might looking at these people. So, though, After it encouraged a while, and it took me away to a little while, I look, and I started to know, oh, it was going to ring my son. Otherwise, why I didn't exactly want to ring my son. Like, really, after feeling bad about not getting, getting, or having to see it in a night, also five, eating, not real.
[27:42]
It's a real thing that I think you're feeling bad about not getting these, this email chain, which I later saw to know, which was, you know, oh, fine, but not all that. So this is interesting. Man, at that point, can I keep so hard open? Not so hard? Is it thin? What makes I want so easy to know? Say, like, just being, you know, like, naughty, or forget, and then, you know, as a novel, be happy, because I swive that you don't have to go that close to this, but it's cheaper kind of to read this kind of sound. It is setting my feeling to instead of you noticing This is a huge to human feeling, so this is the point regular to keep my heart human feeling open, you know? We ha- is it such a big song? It's so easy to call this. We can call it some behatchment. Or... That's a word that, you know, that we tend to, we have to, you know, take kind of some negatively sometimes, but it's, uh, yeah.
[28:53]
We have some connection to co-op ourselves. You know, we're fish that record together. And because it is each of them to be totally tiny and what it's in a fish should be putting all their meat into each and getting through some dragon's gate. Afterward, by the way, they're trying to argue dragon weapons. the reality that they did. Because I'm like, I totally do what I eat about killing. This means to know the heart of other people, what people think about it. If we sit, you know, we get a lot of ideas about what it is about what it is to be enough. So if people are thinking, so I'm feeling like, see, that's, you know. But that rich belief know how you look around to none of the fish. Oh, we, as he said, know what a fish.
[29:55]
We have no fish feet or pretty good fish. Him and I be, cause they're not a fish. Everybody do know what another. Know what more you look for. The fish people's very good feel. They are fish. They are fish. They are fish. And rare they to have. They don't see. Or they know the whole way. But that person thinks to say that person has really a whole other item. What about what they're trying to do? Often. And not to turn away the best way from it, just because it looks like [...] these strange things that I don't know who they understand are and are kind of scared to be scared to me or irritable not be seen to me as invited to a meeting to really everything making everything and how sometimes it takes a little turn that to be a
[31:14]
Lest nobody's name sought to their frame and see open that of causing more day-hearted with our suffering. They open cells, but ask how that can be, uh, happen weeks from this as more soon as they can. And I think there has been a squeeze in the ancient since olden times. No one accept to see fish, notice the fish is hard to see. No one is. except a bird of his balls and her patterns to pass a small part in the corner. But that's it. Those are straplower people, and they're in the dust of our skates. Booth, damn, but the snakes. Toots of all these are rare. Now, what is there to go off? To be true that all they do is the human dragon skates are in being that gate. They know one another's in- Let me re- Know what? no tension and have the same heart. Or they share the heart of this.
[32:20]
The fishes. What is it? Breaking through the nine bands. Do you make hearts like great bands? I'm looking by a bird. Those who are not trying everything to fish hardly do. They know this. Must make his. If you have seen everything, stay again. When a bird thinks. Eyes in the sky. You should know. Beasts do not even drink Fish all we need of finding or following their traits. They know one another's art, as they do not know that. Unlike people, there is such a thing. People who do, they cannot see. There has been not no one see or imagine this as saying those are practicings. And since Buddhists, large and however so small, all of them can help us see the truth. On phono faces their own traces. Hundreds. Thousands. Right? You never know a Buddha to go up the trace through that when you are not a Henskate Buddha.
[33:25]
They know one another. You may wonder whose intention or why you do not know. The reason is that while Buddhas see those traces with a Buddha's eye, those who are not Buddhas do not have a Buddha's eye and just notice the Buddha's attributes. All who do not know should search out the trace of a Buddha. Search out the trace of the Buddha's path. To illuminate your trace is accomplished by studying a Buddha's true prince. Accomplishing this is Buddha Dharma. Unless you have a really important question, you should stop. Anybody? Good.
[34:27]
Thank you very much.
