Four Treasure Seals
5/5/2010, Gengo Akiba dharma talk at Tassajara.
The talk explores the core Buddhist concept of impermanence, focusing on the transient nature of all phenomena, including ego and self, which are influenced by changing conditions and relationships. The notion that everything lacks a permanent self forms the basis of Buddhist teachings, with meditation serving as a practice to realize this truth and achieve Nirvana. The discussion references Dogen's teachings, particularly emphasizing learning about oneself through forgetting the self, contrasting with Western ideas of self-exploration.

AI Suggested Title: Embracing Impermanence, Transcending Self
First one, it says, show means everything. Constantly, everything is impermanency, everything is changing constantly. Everything, every phenomena is not Everything exists in this world. Everything is changing constantly. Greek philosopher also said the same thing. Even our life force is constantly changing.
[01:08]
Your heart is constantly changing. The river, creeks, water is always changing. The mountain is also changing. That's the first Buddha's treasure. Every existence doesn't have its own self or substance. There's nothing.
[02:10]
Something exists forever as a form. We don't have that kind of things. That's second prison seal. We tend to think we have self, ego, but we don't have it. According to Buddhism, we don't have it. We don't have much time, so I cannot really break down. I cannot explain all this. So I just said that much. This is very unique aspect of Buddhism. It doesn't have it.
[03:14]
Only Buddhism says this. Are you surprised to find out that we don't have ego, we don't have self? To realize we don't have self, we don't have forms, we don't have ego, to realize it's very scary, it's very uncomfortable. Therefore, to exist in this world, it's very, it's kind of suffering.
[04:16]
Everything is really, we are based on such nothingness. It's really not easy, suffering. Everything is suffering. For instance, think about our human being. We often are angry, cry, laugh. We do many things. Fight, compete. And if you hold on to it, it's very suffering. If you really understand these three
[05:27]
If you really understand these three things, then you can go to Niyavana. You have peace of mind. That's the idea of Buddhism. The idea of... We practice meditation to really reach this state and to understand and cultivate yourself to get there. So when we meditate, that's really practicing this.
[06:48]
We are trying to reach The way of mind, the way of thinking. The four of the [...] Many great priests in Buddha, everybody wrote so many books. Just to let you know about this truth. There are so many ways it's trying to tell you. There are so many books. So many. But just trying to explain this.
[07:53]
As you know, Doggen's消防現像, it's very difficult even in Japanese. When somebody has to translate to English, that's even harder. It's very difficult. So Dou Genzenji was trying to explain this from many different aspects, many different ways. That's Shoubou Genzenji. This morning you're reading Genzhou Kohan There is a line that says to study Zen way is to learn about yourself.
[09:12]
To learn about yourself. To learn Find out yourself means to forget yourself. Western culture is also to seek yourself, to know yourself. That's very important. But Buddhism, you have to learn to forget yourself. To find out about yourself, is you are in a certain environment and things people around you will evaluate.
[10:23]
That means everything doesn't have self. Egoless. No substance. These are Buddha's three treasure seals. So please always go back to this fundamental teaching. From these four teachings, many things evolved from this. Many teachings are coming from this. Say it again? I see.
[11:28]
We think we have ego, we have self. But... But... This is all... Yeah, ego consciousness. That's all you learned, living in this society. It's all learned. And words, using words. So we are really creating ourselves, our ego, with our words. So you think you know yourself, you have ego, you have your own identity, these are all created by using our own words. You shouldn't forget that.
[12:32]
We shouldn't forget that we exist with interrelationship with everything. People, things, conditions, environment, that creates you. So if you change your environment or conditions, you change right away. That's the good proof. So now 20 minutes is over, so... So please ask questions. Please ask, and he will answer. Anybody? Just be relaxed, be easy. Don't be so... Anybody? You know, it's a deathless.
[13:36]
Deathless. It's the same. You are born, yeah. And you are constantly changing. Everything is impermanency. In some special circumstance, you exist here.
[14:39]
When you die, We say death is a word kind of make decision that you died. But it's not really you're dead. It's just your condition has changed. So therefore, we don't say you're born or dead. We don't say that. To appear and disappear is a part of phenomena.
[15:55]
That's how Buddhism understands. What do you think is the biggest challenge in practicing Buddhism? That's just it. That's what I'm trying to do. When you meditate, you are experiencing, practicing all this, what Buddha says.
[17:09]
And sometimes you are sleepy, sometimes you sit really well, sometimes you experience so many different ways of meditation, and experiencing what he says. So, by doing it, by meditation, you are trying to eventually go to Nirvana. If there is no self, then what is there? Or to put it another way, What is all of this? But you're here. To think you have self, that's you decided.
[18:23]
Your own idea of self. There is a form that exists right now. That's also truth. It really exists. So you can take it that way too. So... However, you think you have ego, you have self, that's your own thinking, your knowledge of yourself.
[19:41]
You have an answer. So that's not everything about you. That's a very small part. It's all words created or thoughts. Your experience created you that way. Your body has breathing, breath out, you do breathing, and your internal organs functions by itself. You don't have to do anything, just your existing. But your mind, you think you have self, ego, you exist, you have forms.
[20:51]
We are here because of all this interrelationship with your around, all the relationship with other things. Therefore, you exist. Into the whole thing, it's self. So if you do meditate, you include body, mind, speed, everything, everything is there. Through Zazen, you realize everything is included. If you are one with the universe, you realize it. And if you really understand that, then, yeah. Then you take care of other things, surrendering other people.
[21:57]
You really be equally kind. And that's called Nirvana. Yes. Before Nirvana, We get angry and we get sad. If you could say something about getting along with one another. We get angry and we get sad. If you could say something about getting along with one another. We get angry and we get sad. Most difficult thing is our heart, mind's phenomena. It's very difficult. And consciousness. Because you cannot control yourself.
[23:03]
We sometimes fight too. Even small things we fight. So we do all this but still has to go back this truth. Always changing. So don't and so you so you want to come out and you're gonna need to eat a row to you for me do you get so you're gonna call school [...]
[24:05]
It's hard to understand. [...] So we all get angry and confused. We go through all these emotions with our mind, body, everything. Until before you reach Nyabana. But to realize why you are being, to understand why you are that way, why you are angry, why other person is angry. If you understand it and... And to realize you're angry right now.
[25:08]
To realize what you're doing. Then you can control. Once you recognize what you're doing, then you can control more. And if you understand, then you can forgive easier. And then this is the really, always go back to this truth. And to get angry, cry, this is a very natural thing. But eventually by practicing Zazheno, you try to cultivate yourself to get there. So don't attach to anything. Let go. Because everything is changing all the time. No point hanging onto it. You know, we have this idea of impermanence.
[26:10]
So how do we let go of the idea and actually live? Live the teaching. You know, This teaching is a natural scientist. This is the原理 of this world. It will not change. It will not change. I think Chakamani Buddha was really a scientist, naturalist. He really was an amazing being and really understand the world through all this hard practice and meditating.
[27:12]
And this is a real truth. That doesn't change. But that's Newton's theory. Newton's theory. That gravity, it doesn't change. And this is like that. So all these things are made of an atom. And all this combination coming together creates this form. So therefore it doesn't change. If there is no self, what is doing to suffer?
[28:46]
What is that one? It's kind of similar to that... If there is no self, what is doing to suffer? We are born and we have formed a human body and we have learned many things. And we have our mind, knowledge, we create ourselves. That really exists. Next, we see this.
[29:58]
Oh, I see. Oh. I said you understand, you understand already in Japanese. Oh, they don't mind. Okay, sorry, sorry. Okay, all right. So. So how is it like creating another? Yeah, this is like, you know, I'm creating my own question and answer. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a kind of game, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Blind, yeah, yeah, that's right. Therefore, we need to understand this with the whole thing, everything. We tend to think we exist ourselves, we do everything, we learn everything yourself. No, it's not true. You are being existed by other forces.
[31:01]
Therefore, Buddhism teaching is you have to take care of every sentient beings. You have to treat them very well because we coexist together. Everything is important. We have to live together. If you really coexist with everything, take care of everything, then self is born. Co-interrelationship with everything. Then your self exists. Thank you very much. Even Sanga Week people, please come back next year too. He's advertising.
[32:01]
Thank you so much everybody.
